Who is Chris Redd?
Chris Redd was born on March 25, 1985, in St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up in the Chicago suburbs. He developed a passion for comedy early on, initially pursuing rap before discovering improv at Jokes & Notes comedy club in Chicago. He trained at The Second City and iO Theater in Chicago, two of the country’s most respected improv schools, before eventually relocating to New York for stand-up comedy.
In 2017, Redd joined the cast of Saturday Night Live ahead of the show’s 43rd season, serving as a cast member for five seasons through 2022. During his tenure, he became known for his celebrity impressions—U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Kanye West, Sterling K. Brown, and Mayor Eric Adams among others—and for his ability to contribute meaningfully to sketches across the show’s spectrum of styles.
In 2018, Redd won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for writing the song “Come Back Barack,” which aired during Chance the Rapper’s episode on November 18, 2017. The award was shared with co-writers Kenan Thompson and Will Stephen, and composer Eli Brueggemann.
Since departing SNL, Redd has continued his comedy career while pursuing acting opportunities. He’s released an HBO Max special called “Why Am I Like This?” and created an Audible project called “Headcase.” He remains a regular at the Comedy Cellar in New York City, where he’s known for his energetic performances and ability to connect with audiences.
