So, you’re the funny one in your friend group. You think you can do this.
Good. Prove it.
But before you sign up for an open mic, you need to understand the golden rule of starting out: Nobody wants to hear your life story. They want a “Tight Five.”
What is a Tight Five?
It’s five minutes of your absolute best material. No fat. No “umms.” Just punchlines.
The Structure
- The Opener (30 seconds): A quick joke that defines who you are immediately. If you look like a nerd, address it. If you look like a serial killer, address it. Break the tension.
- The Middle (3 minutes): 2-3 bits that flow into each other. Stick to one theme if you can.
- The Closer (1.5 minutes): Your strongest joke. The one that gets the biggest laugh. You want to leave them remembering that specific laugh.
The Mistake to Avoid
Don’t riff. Don’t try to do crowd work like you see on TikTok. Those guys have been doing it for 15 years. You have been doing it for 15 minutes. Write your jokes. Memorize them. Say them.
Study the Tape:
Watch the “New Faces” clips on Mint. See how they structure their sets. Copy the rhythm, not the jokes.
