Darrell Hammond: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch

Darrell Hammond holds a unique place in comedy history. As Saturday Night Live’s longest-serving cast member and a master of impressions, he became a fixture of American popular culture for 14 seasons. His ability to embody celebrities with precision and humor made him essential to SNL’s success during a critical era of the show.

Who is Darrell Hammond?

Darrell Hammond was born in 1955 and became a stand-up comedian before his SNL breakthrough. After seven years of trying to break into SNL with two failed auditions, Hammond finally caught the attention of an SNL producer while performing a Bill Clinton impression—timing that proved fortuitous. Phil Hartman had just left the show, and Clinton needed a voice. After an exclusive audition for creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels, Hammond was brought on board as a cast member for the 1995-96 season.

For the next 14 years, Hammond remained on SNL, becoming a reliable performer and master of characters. He made more SNL appearances than any cast member except Kenan Thompson and impersonated 107+ celebrities during his tenure. Bill Clinton was his most frequent impression, but his range extended from Regis Philbin to Sean Connery to countless other public figures.

On September 19, 2014, Hammond was announced as the new announcer of SNL, replacing legendary announcer Don Pardo, who had died the month before. This transition proved that Hammond’s voice and comedic instincts remained valued long after his departure from the main cast.

Today, Hammond is a regular at the Comedy Cellar in New York City, continuing to perform stand-up and maintain his connection to the New York comedy community.

Darrell Hammond’s Comedy Style

Hammond’s comedy is rooted in character work and impressions. His ability to capture the mannerisms, vocal patterns, and essence of famous people made him invaluable to SNL. His stand-up similarly emphasizes observation and character—he finds humor in the specific ways people present themselves to the world.

What Fans and Fellow Comedians Say

Hammond’s record of appearances on SNL and his longevity on the show demonstrate the level of respect he earned from the SNL team and audiences alike. His continued role as SNL announcer speaks to the enduring recognition of his talent.
