Dave Hill: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Dave Hill?
Dave Hill was born in 1970 in Cleveland, Ohio, moved to New York City in a totally sweet apartment with a party deck and everything (his words), and has since built one of the more genuinely unusual careers in comedy. He is a comedian, writer, musician, actor, radio host, and man-about-town — that description is from his own bio and it is accurate.
His band Valley Lodge wrote the theme song “Go” for HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, a credit that has outlasted any number of television appearances. He is also the resident heavy metal expert on Malcolm Gladwell and Rick Rubin’s Broken Record podcast, and the founding member of Witch Taint, which he describes as the most extremely extreme Norwegian Black Metal band from Gary, Indiana ever probably. He hosted his own radio show, The Goddamn Dave Hill Show, on WFMU in Jersey City for five years, and now hosts The Dave Hill Goodtime Hour, a weekly livestream and podcast on the Maximum Fun network. He has appeared on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Girls5Eva, Joe Pera Talks with You, Inside Amy Schumer, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Tick, The Jim Gaffigan Show, and the U.S. version of Would I Lie to You. He starred in his own television series, The King of Miami, which was cancelled even though he really liked it. He has written for The New York Times, The Paris Review, GQ, McSweeney’s, Salon, and Guitar World. He is the author of three books — Tasteful Nudes, Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and Parking the Moose. He has performed comedy at Sing Sing Correctional Facility twice, inside a Mexican prison, and at Phish’s Mondegreen festival. In February 2026, he taped a new comedy special at the Bell House in Brooklyn, directed by Tom Papa.
Dave Hill’s Comedy Style
Hill operates at the intersection of comedy, music, and faux-celebrity self-mythology in a way that is entirely his own. Variety named him one of their 10 Comics to Watch in 2007, something he still won’t shut up about. His stage persona is a perfectly calibrated mix of genuine charm and elaborate self-delusion — a rock star who may or may not be as famous as he believes, delivering material that requires the audience to figure out where the bit ends and the actual person begins. The guitar solos are real.
