Who is Jay Jurden?
Jay Jurden is originally from Mississippi and is based in New York City. He is a comedian, writer, and actor who performs regularly across the country. He was a staff writer for Apple TV+’s Emmy-nominated show The Problem with Jon Stewart, earning four WGA Award nominations for his work there between 2022 and 2024.
He has performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon three times and has also appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and HBO’s High Maintenance. He was named one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch in 2022 and listed on Vulture’s Comedians You Should and Will Know in 2020. He was a New Faces selection at Just for Laughs 2019. His album Jay Jurden Y’all debuted at number one on iTunes. He has written for Vulture, Teen Vogue, McSweeney’s, and The New Yorker. He wrote for Marvel’s Voices: X-Men #1. His debut stand-up special Yes Ma’am premiered on Hulu on November 7, 2025 — a fast-paced, punchline-dense special about what it means to be Black, Southern, and queer. He toured a new hour called the Nothing Special Tour through early 2026.
Jay Jurden’s Comedy Style
Jurden describes his comedy as trying to fit ten pounds of jokes into a five-pound bag — dense punchline construction delivered with the energy of someone who genuinely can’t wait to get to the next bit. His material is rooted in his Mississippi background and his queer identity, presented with a Southern directness that makes the jokes feel inevitable. The New Yorker bylines and the Marvel comics credit reflect range that extends well past the stage.
