Joyelle Nicole Johnson: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch

Who is Joyelle Nicole Johnson?

Joyelle Nicole Johnson was born in 1981 and grew up in New Jersey, earning her bachelor’s degree from Boston College. She is a comedian, writer, and actress based in Brooklyn. She started performing stand-up after a friend filmed her bantering with customers at the high-end cocktail lounge where she worked and showed her the footage — the same origin story she tells on stage.

She made her network television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers and subsequently performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon twice in one year. She has been featured on This Week at the Comedy Cellar and Comics to Watch for Comedy Central, Wyatt Cenac’s Night Train for Seeso, and LaffMob for TruTV. She was selected for the 2018 FOX Comedy Showcase and was a finalist in NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity showcase. She wrote for Broad City and Pause with Sam Jay (HBO). She has acted in HBO’s Crashing, Search Party, Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest, Showtime’s Flatbush Misdemeanors, and Apple’s Helpsters. She appeared on Celebrity Family Feud in 2025. Her debut stand-up special Love Joy, executive produced by Jimmy Fallon, was released on Peacock and received a Critics Choice Award nomination. Her debut album YellJoy was released in 2021. She joined NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! as a panelist in 2023. She is an abortion rights advocate and tours with Lizz Winstead’s Abortion Access Front. She has performed at SF Sketchfest, Bonnaroo, the New York Comedy Festival, and Bumbershoot, and has opened for Dave Chappelle, Russell Peters, and Maria Bamford.

Joyelle Nicole Johnson’s Comedy Style

Johnson’s comedy is joyful in a genuine rather than performed way — she brings energy to a room without forcing it, and her material is personal, observational, and built from a perspective that is specifically hers. The writing credits on Broad City and Pause with Sam Jay reflect a comedic sensibility that translates across formats. The Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! panelist role reflects her ability to be quick and sharp on current events in real time.
