Louis Katz: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Louis Katz?
Louis Katz grew up in the Bay Area, attended UC Berkeley where he performed with the Theater Rice sketch comedy troupe, and after graduating began doing stand-up throughout the Bay Area before moving to New York. He made his television debut on Last Call with Carson Daly in 2005, the same year he appeared at the Montreal Comedy Festival and Atlanta’s Laffapalooza Comedy Festival.
Over the following two decades, his stand-up has been featured on NBC, HBO, and five times on Comedy Central — including his own half-hour special and an appearance on This Is Not Happening, which has been viewed over three million times on YouTube. His album KATZKILLS was named one of Vulture’s top five comedy albums of the year, calling it “a raucous comedy party.” His first one-hour special was released on Epix in 2022 as part of their Unprotected Sets series. His most recent special, Present/Tense (The Best Comedian You Never Heard Of), was released independently on YouTube in late 2023 and crossed one million views in under three months. In January 2026, he sold out both shows of a live special taping in San Francisco. Dave Attell has called him one of the best joke writers working today. Ali Wong has called him one of the funniest and most prolific comedians she knows. Marc Maron featured him twice on WTF. Doug Stanhope’s endorsement is unprintable in polite company but legendary in comedy circles.
Louis Katz’s Comedy Style
Katz’s comedy has been described as “cerebral filth” — a useful phrase for material that is simultaneously highbrow in construction and lowbrow in content, where the joke architecture is rigorous and the subject matter is not. He is a punchline-density comedian in the New York tradition, which means the jokes come fast, the tags are precise, and nothing is wasted. The “best comedian you never heard of” framing in his 2023 special title is both accurate and self-aware: he has been earning the highest praise from the people who know best for twenty years without crossing over to wide recognition, and he has found a way to make that observation itself part of the act.
