Matt Richards: Cellar Regular and Multi-Talented Comedy Renaissance Man

Matt Richards is one of those rare comedians who has mastered multiple crafts simultaneously. He’s equally at home on the stand-up stage, in front of a camera, and at the writer’s table. Based in New York, he’s become a fixture at the Comedy Cellar, where his sharp observational comedy and quick wit have earned him a loyal following among both audiences and fellow performers.

Who is Matt Richards?

Richards is a trained actor, comedian, and writer who has performed thousands of shows across the country. He’s appeared on television and streaming in shows including Flatbush Misdemeanors (Showtime), That Damn Michael Che (HBO Max), 2 Broke Girls (CBS), School of Rock (Nickelodeon), Bizaardvark (Disney), and Run The World (Starz). He also hosts A&E’s Best in Chow.

His writing credits are equally impressive. He was a WGA award-nominated writer for That Damn Michael Che, demonstrating that his talents extend beyond the stage. In 2018, he was selected as a New Face of Comedy at Just for Laughs Montreal, and he was a featured performer at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival. He tours regularly with Craig Robinson & The Nasty Delicious.

Matt Richards’s Comedy Style

Richards’s comedy draws from sharp observation and personal experience. He has the rare ability to be both highly specific—mining his own life and quirks—and universally relatable. His multi-platform work (comedy, acting, writing) has honed his ability to land jokes across different formats and audiences. On stage at the Cellar, his material reflects the fast-paced, crowd-responsive energy of that venue.

What Fans and Fellow Comedians Say

Richards’s versatility has made him a sought-after performer and collaborator. His appearances on major shows and his WGA nomination demonstrate that his peers and industry professionals recognize his talent.
