Matthew Broussard: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Matthew Broussard?
Matthew Broussard was born in New Jersey, raised in Atlanta, won Houston’s Funniest Person in 2012, and is genuinely not sure where he’s from. He has a degree in Applied Mathematics from Rice University. He worked as a financial analyst in Houston while attending open mics at night, lost the job, moved to West Hollywood, and decided to do stand-up full time. His Cajun father and Jewish mother, he says, still want him to take the GMAT.
He was a New Face at Just for Laughs Montreal in 2015 and a runner-up to Jimmy Carr on Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle. He released a Comedy Central Half Hour in 2016. His acting credits include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Mindy Project, The League, and the film Here Today alongside Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish. He has performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Conan. He is the creator of Monday Punday, a webcomic and puzzle app built around puns and wordplay — a project that makes complete sense for a mathematician who became a comedian. His stand-up special Pedantic was released in 2023. His 2026 Educated/Amoral tour is currently underway.
Matthew Broussard’s Comedy Style
Broussard’s comedy is heady, self-effacing, and weirdly educational — that description is from his own bio and it is accurate. He writes jokes the way a mathematician writes proofs: there is a setup, a logical chain, and a conclusion that is surprising but, in retrospect, inevitable. The math background is not a gimmick. It shows in how tightly his jokes are constructed and how precisely the tags stack.
He describes himself as fully aware of how douchey he looks, and the act lives in that awareness — a comedian who has spent years finding the most efficient path to a laugh and can’t help but show his work.
