Michael Kosta: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Michael Kosta?
Michael Kosta was born on September 27, 1979, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, attended Huron High School, then the University of Illinois where he played on four Big Ten Championship tennis teams. After earning a degree in Speech Communications in 2002, he played tennis on the ITF and ATP tour for two years, reaching a world ranking of 864 — a number he still uses as his email signature twenty-plus years later. His memoir Lucky Loser, published by Harper Collins in March 2025, chronicles that period. He had been working as the assistant men’s tennis coach at the University of Illinois when he transitioned into stand-up comedy.
He is an Emmy Award-winning rotating host and senior correspondent of The Daily Show, having been hired as a correspondent in 2017 and serving as the most-watched guest host in 2023. His stand-up has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan, Chelsea Lately, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. He released a Comedy Central half-hour special in 2011 and his one-hour special Michael Kosta: Detroit. NY. LA. is streaming on Paramount+ and YouTube. He hosted The Comment Section for the E! Network with Joel McHale as executive producer, and co-hosted Fox Sports 1’s Crowd Goes Wild opposite Regis Philbin. He is a frequent contributor to the Tennis Channel and hosts the weekly podcast Tennis Anyone with Michael Kosta. He guest-starred in Tracy Morgan’s NBC series The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins (2026) as a smug sports anchor. He appeared in the Netflix film Pain Hustlers directed by David Yates.
Michael Kosta’s Comedy Style
Kosta brings an athlete’s mentality to stand-up — the discipline, the ability to lose and recover, the willingness to put in repetitions until something works. His comedy is observational and irreverent, built on the self-aware absurdity of a man who was simultaneously a professional tennis player ranked 864 in the world and convinced it was a viable career. The Daily Show experience has given him the ability to work quickly with current events, while his stand-up roots keep the material personal and specific.
