Pete Lee: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Pete Lee?
Pete Lee was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, graduated from Janesville Craig High School in 1995, attended the University of Minnesota, and spent several years in Minneapolis before moving to New York. After moving to the city, he was selected to perform at Just for Laughs Montreal, where he was voted a standout performer. In 2008, he made his network television debut on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, finishing as a semi-finalist.
He is the first stand-up comedian to receive a standing ovation on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon — something that happened after Jimmy personally attended one of Pete’s live shows in New York and immediately invited him on the show. He has since made nine appearances on The Tonight Show through 2025. He has been featured on Comedy Central Presents and This Week at the Comedy Cellar on Comedy Central. His stand-up special Pete Lee: Tall, Dark and Pleasant premiered on Showtime in July 2021. He has been a cast member of TruTV’s Greatest Ever, hosted NFL Rush on Nickelodeon’s NickToons in coordination with the NFL, was a writer and cast member for three seasons on VH1’s Best Week Ever, and appeared on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle and TruTV’s Comedy Knockout. In 2025, he lost his home in the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles.
Pete Lee’s Comedy Style
Lee’s comedy is joyful — which is a harder thing to sustain than it sounds in stand-up, where the default mode tends toward complaint. His Midwestern roots are visible in his material in the best way: warmth, precision, and a genuine delight in human observation. The standing ovation on The Tonight Show happened because that energy is contagious. Jimmy Fallon came to a club show and couldn’t not put him on television.
