Robby Hoffman: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch

Who is Robby Hoffman?

Robby Hoffman was born Rivkah Sarah Hoffman on December 2, 1989, in Brooklyn, New York, the seventh of ten children in a Hasidic Jewish household. Her parents later transitioned from Reform to Hasidic practices, and her mother eventually converted to Christianity. The family moved to Montreal, where she attended private high school at Bialik Secondary School before enrolling at McGill University to study accounting and communications. She was accepted into McGill’s graduate CPA program, quit a few hours into her first day, and pursued a career in comedy instead.

She began as a television writer, winning a Daytime Emmy Award in 2019 for her work on the PBS children’s series Odd Squad. She was a staff writer on Workin’ Moms, Baroness Von Sketch Show, and The Chris Gethard Show. In 2019 she recorded her first stand-up special I’m Nervous at Just for Laughs Toronto for CraveTV. She was named one of Comedy Central’s Up Next comedians in 2018, appeared on Conan O’Brien’s Comics to Watch list, and was named one of Vulture’s Comedians to Know in 2020. She appeared in History of the World, Part II on Hulu. She married former Bachelorette star Gabby Windey in January 2025. Her recurring role as Randi — a former Hasidic Jew from Crown Heights hired as a Hollywood assistant — in Season 4 of HBO’s Hacks earned her a 2025 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series; the New York Times called her a “breakout star.” She is filming Hacks Season 5, has been cast in a new comedy series from Steve Carell and Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence for HBO, and appeared on Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney. Her debut Netflix stand-up special Wake Up, directed by John Mulaney and filmed at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, premiered December 14, 2025. Deadline named her one of the comedians who won 2025. Her 2026 stand-up tour is sold out across multiple cities.

Robby Hoffman’s Comedy Style

Hoffman performs like a millennial with the soul of an old man — her own framing, and useful. She has a thick Brooklyn accent that persisted through her Montreal upbringing, and a deadpan, curmudgeonly persona that the New York Times has compared to Larry David. John Mulaney, who directed her Netflix special and calls her one of the funniest people living, described her in his introduction to Wake Up as “a legend at the top of her game.” Her material circles back consistently to poverty, class, and the dislocation of suddenly being surrounded by the wealthy after growing up without money.
