Rufat Agayev: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Rufat Agayev?
Rufat Agayev is a Brooklyn-based stand-up comedian, writer, and actor. He was born in Azerbaijan and immigrated to the United States with his family in the early 1990s as a refugee of war. As a teenager he fell in love with hip-hop and began rapping, eventually gaining traction on popular music blogs while attending Florida State University. His music career led him to open for Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, and Mac Miller. After moving to New York City to pursue rap more seriously, he pivoted to stand-up — encouraged by his friend Kevin Barnett, a writer on Broad City, who told him to hit the open mics.
He quickly became a fixture in the NYC comedy scene, known for sharp writing, big act-outs, and clever observations about everyday absurdities. He has performed at New York’s best clubs including Carolines on Broadway and the Comedy Cellar, and has been featured on popular live comedy shows including Comedy at the Knitting Factory and Comedians You Should Know. He was a finalist in New York’s Funniest at the New York Comedy Festival. He is also known for bringing comedy into storefronts and record shops in Brooklyn, drawing audiences who might not otherwise step into a club. His debut comedy special The Bad Rufat! is executive produced by Joe Pera (800 Pound Gorilla Media) and directed by Shaliek Jenkins.
Rufat Agayev’s Comedy Style
Agayev’s comedy is incisive and dynamic — the sharp writing and act-outs reflect someone who came to stand-up from a performance background and brings genuine craft to the stage. The Azerbaijani refugee-to-rapper-to-comedian backstory is not incidental; it informs a perspective on American life that is specific, earned, and very funny. The storefront and record shop shows in Brooklyn represent a comedian who takes the room to the audience as much as the other way around.
