Sean Patton: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch

Who is Sean Patton?

Sean Patton is from New Orleans — genuinely from there, not just born there — and started doing stand-up in the Crescent City before moving to New York. The New Orleans origin matters because it shows up in everything about how he performs: the storytelling tradition, the tolerance for darkness, the understanding that good material takes the long way around.

He has performed at an extraordinary range of comedy festivals: Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney International Comedy Festival, Just for Laughs in Montreal (2008, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018), Just for Laughs Chicago and Toronto, Dublin Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe (where he premiered his critically acclaimed solo show Number One at The Pleasance in 2017 and returned with Contradickhead at The Gilded Balloon in 2019), Bonnaroo, SXSW, and more. He has appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan, The Tonight Show, and Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham and Half Hour. His hour special Number One, executive produced by Michael Che, premiered on Peacock in December 2022. He released three albums between 2013 and 2021.

He co-starred as Markie Hillridge, the gym teacher, in FX’s English Teacher alongside creator Brian Jordan Alvarez for two seasons before the show was cancelled in late 2025. He accompanied David Cross on his 66-city, six-country world tour in 2023 and again in 2024. He is currently working on a new hour of stand-up material, which he may film in late 2026 or early 2027. He described his audition for English Teacher this way: he got the text about it while bouncing between five spots at the Comedy Cellar and The Stand in one night, read the script on the subway, ran the audition on Zoom at 1 a.m., and got the callback the next morning.

Sean Patton’s Comedy Style

Patton is a storyteller in the deep sense — not a comedian who tells stories between jokes, but a comedian whose material is built from narrative the way a carpenter builds with wood. He describes his work as celebrating the beauty of human flaw, specifically his own. The Edinburgh solo shows demonstrate a theatrical range that most club comics never develop, and the club work demonstrates that he never let the theatrical ambition make him soft. Both things are true at once.
