Seaton Smith: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Seaton Smith?
Seaton Smith is originally from Washington, D.C., and has been doing stand-up comedy for over twenty-two years. He has performed at every major comedy club in New York, headlined clubs and colleges across the country, and toured internationally. He was a New Face at Just for Laughs Montreal, has performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Iveagh Gardens Comedy Festival in Dublin, and in 2025 made his Edinburgh Fringe debut with the solo show Trauma Bonding at the Pleasance Courtyard.
He made his television debut in 2014 as Motif on Fox’s Mulaney alongside John Mulaney, Martin Short, and Nasim Pedrad. He had a breakout late-night performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2015. Additional television credits include Inside Amy Schumer, HBO’s Girls, Hulu’s Difficult People, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Search Party, That Damn Michael Che, the Primetime Emmy-nominated series aka Wyatt Cenac, and Alternatino with Arturo Castro. His film credits include Chris Rock’s Top Five (2014) and Tamara Jenkins’ Private Life (2018). His 2023 stand-up special Live at Madison Square Garden was mentioned in the New York Times as part of the Best Comedy of 2023 and produced several viral videos with millions of views. He spent two years opening for John Mulaney on his worldwide arena tour. He directed, wrote, and starred in the documentary short Heat of the Moment (2024), a behind-the-scenes look at his sold-out tour with The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas. Vulture named him one of the 50 Comedians You Should Know.
Seaton Smith’s Comedy Style
Smith performs with an energy that Chortle described as mesmerizing and livewire, full of joy and amazing comic energy. That is accurate but undersells the intelligence underneath. His material is personal and rooted in his life, his family, and his background — and his Edinburgh show in 2025 was specifically about going deeper into that territory, treating childhood stories that seemed tragic and finding what is actually funny about them. He is one of the more physically committed performers working the New York club circuit, which creates an in-person experience that translates poorly to clips and well to rooms.
