Tina Friml: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Tina Friml’s comedy asks audiences to rethink their assumptions about disability, vulnerability, and what it means to be “unforgettable.” Born with cerebral palsy, she’s transformed a medical condition that many might shy away from discussing into material that’s funny, incisive, and deeply human. Her recognition as one of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch in 2024 validates what audiences have known: she’s a rising star.
Who is Tina Friml?
Tina Friml was born on January 2, 1994, in Burlington, Vermont. She developed cerebral palsy from birth complications, an experience that would later become central to her comedic material. Before pursuing comedy, she was deeply involved in community theater and spent ten years as a songwriter, developing artistic skills that inform her stand-up today.
She graduated from Saint Michael’s College in 2016 with a degree in Media Studies, Journalism and Digital Arts. After completing a comedy class at Vermont Comedy Club, Friml began her stand-up career. She won Vermont’s Funniest Comedian in 2018 and became a regular at the Comedy Cellar in New York, touring nationally to sold-out venues.
Her major media breakthroughs include appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (November 2023), “The Drew Barrymore Show,” and Comedy Central’s “Featuring” series. She was selected as a New Face at Just for Laughs Montreal (2019) and performed at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival (2024) alongside appearances at major comedy festivals including the New York Comedy Festival and Women in Comedy Festival.
In 2024, Variety named Tina one of their Top 10 Comics to Watch, recognizing her as a rising voice in comedy. She continues to build her platform while advocating for disability representation in entertainment and accessibility in the arts.
Tina Friml’s Comedy Style
Tina’s signature approach flips societal discomfort back on audiences. She’s said: “A lot of people think I suffer from cerebral palsy, which I don’t. I have cerebral palsy. I suffer from people.” Her journalism background enables economical joke construction with minimal wording but maximum impact. Her material spans dating, Vermont roots, and childhood memories, delivered with what she describes as “you go, girl” energy.
Her comedy works because it’s honest. She doesn’t perform victimhood; she performs her actual experience, which includes both the challenges of living with disability and the absurdities of how others respond to disability. This balance—making audiences laugh while also making them think—is the mark of a serious comedian.
