Vir Das: Bio, Comedy Style, and Where to Watch
Who is Vir Das?
Vir Das was born on May 31, 1979, in Dehradun, India. He was raised in Nigeria and India, attended the Indian Language School in Lagos, and has been described by the New York Times as the comedian who most embodies the globalization of stand-up. He has performed in 33 countries. He is India’s most successful stand-up comedian and a major Bollywood actor, a combination that is unique in the world of comedy.
He became the first Indian comedian to make a Netflix comedy special with Abroad Understanding (2017). His subsequent Netflix specials include Losing It (2018), Outside In (2020), and Landing (2023), which won the International Emmy Award for Best Comedy in 2023 — the first time that award went to an Indian production. His special Fool Volume (which he also directed) arrived on Netflix in 2025 and earned praise from Vulture as a uniquely sumptuous experience. In November 2021, he performed a monologue at the Kennedy Center called “Two Indias” that went viral internationally. He hosted the 52nd International Emmy Awards in 2024. His Hey Stranger world tour launched in 2026, opening at the Chicago Theatre and including dates at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Lincoln Center Theater in New York, Carnegie Hall, and venues across Asia. He made his directorial debut with Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos (2026), produced by Aamir Khan Productions. His memoir The Outsider: A Memoir for Misfits was published in December 2025. His Bollywood acting credits include Delhi Belly, Badmaash Company, and Go Goa Gone. His American acting credits include Whiskey Cavalier on ABC.
Vir Das’s Comedy Style
Das builds comedy that operates across cultures simultaneously — material shaped by India, Africa, America, and Europe, delivered in a way that finds the universal inside the specific. His specials are theatrically ambitious in a way that most stand-up is not, and the Lincoln Center Theater residency for Hey Stranger reflects a genuine interest in expanding what the form can do. When he drops into a room like the Comedy Cellar for a set, what you see is the raw laboratory version of material that eventually becomes something performed at the Royal Albert Hall.
