If you’ve spent any time watching our Live Stream, you know the drill. The lights dim. The MC walks up. And you hear that iconic intro: “And now, for your host… Harry Lime!”
Except, Harry Lime never walks out.
It’s one of those inside jokes that’s been running for decades, baffling tourists and delighting regulars. But if you’re new to the Comedy Cellar ecosystem, you might be scratching your head. Who is this guy? And why is he ghosting the audience every night?
The Third Man Connection
Harry Lime isn’t a comic. He’s not the club owner. He’s a character from the 1949 film noir classic, The Third Man, played by Orson Welles.
In the movie, Lime is a charming, manipulative, and elusive figure who faked his own death. The Cellar’s usage of the name is a nod to that old-school, gritty, underground vibe. It sets the tone. You aren’t in a sanitized theater; you’re in a basement in the Village. Anything can happen.
Why Keep the Bit Going?
Comedy is built on repetition and callbacks. The “Harry Lime” intro serves a few purposes:
- Tradition: It connects the modern lineup (Jordan Jensen, Gary Owen, etc.) to the legends of the 80s and 90s.
- The Vibe: It separates the “tourists” from the “locals.” If you know, you know.
- The Reset: It’s a palate cleanser. It signals that the show is starting now.
